Library Assistant – Part Time

Class 2

  • Education/Certification Requirements: High School Diploma or Equivalency, Part-time and/or temporary KDLA Certification
  • Position: Library Assistant
  • Status: Part-Time, Nonexempt
  • Supervision: Works under direct, or limited direct, supervision of the Director or appropriate Department Head(s)
  • Salary Range: $12.00 – $12.85 per hour

Job Summary

  • Acts as a friendly and welcoming ambassador to all customers
  • Keeps library clean and neat
  • Provides patron assistance in a wide variety of ways, including basic assistance with public computers
  • Has access to and uses staff side ILS to circulate materials and assist with location of materials

Essential Responsibilities

  • Acknowledges everyone’s presence with a smile, eye contact, and greeting
  • Maintains a desire to help patrons
  • Remains teachable and cooperative with both patrons and coworkers
  • Participates in opening and closing routines
  • Keeps desk area neat and orderly
  • Straightens reading and other areas, including the children’s bookmobile
  • Checks in returned books/materials and places them for shelving
  • Shelves books, shelf reads, and dusts shelves
  • Refills paper products and soap in restrooms
  • Performs light cleaning tasks throughout the library and grounds
  • Assists patrons with directions and explains circulation policies
  • Checks materials in/out and inspects for damage
  • Records circulation statistics and program attendance
  • Assists patrons with computers and applications
  • Refers meeting room requests to Director
  • Helps locate materials and answers reference questions
  • Refers complex questions and ILL requests to senior staff
  • Promotes library programs and digital services
  • Provides reader advisory and OPAC assistance
  • Assists with copier, microfilm reader, printers, etc.
  • Answers phone, provides information, and makes referrals
  • Calls patrons about holds and programs as requested
  • Handles overdue fines and payments
  • Gives directions or refers to more knowledgeable staff
  • Assists with seasonal decorating
  • Provides administrative help (notices, verifications, etc.)
  • Seeks help from senior staff when needed
  • Supports junior staff and volunteers
  • Assists with programs under Programming and Outreach Head
  • Participates in continuing education and certification renewals
  • Manages PTO and submits paperwork timely
